Junk and Corrupt Files: What Safe Cleanup Actually Means
Find zero-byte files, broken shortcuts, unreachable network links, and corrupt images: preview-first cleanup beyond temp-file sweepers.
CCleaner, Wise Disk Cleaner, and Microsoft PC Manager handle temp files, browser caches, and registry tidying. They do not tell you which images fail to decode or which shortcuts point at deleted targets.
DupeZappa Junk & Corrupt Finder targets file integrity: broken artifacts that waste attention and break workflows, not just disk space.
What gets detected
| Category | Signal |
|---|---|
zero_byte_file |
Size is exactly 0 |
broken_shortcut |
.lnk resolves to missing/empty target |
shortcut_unreachable |
Network target exists but is offline now |
corrupt_image |
Decode fails for supported formats (jpg, png, gif, bmp, tiff, webp) |
Unreachable shortcuts are separated from broken ones on purpose. A VPN outage should not look like mass corruption on your NAS, using the same principle as NAS duplicate scanning.
Why this is not "registry cleanup"
Registry and temp sweepers optimize system hygiene. Junk & Corrupt Finder optimizes trust in your file tree:
- Zero-byte exports from failed saves.
- Broken project shortcuts after a drive letter change.
- Corrupt images in a family archive that thumbnail but will not print.
Preview each category before delete. Zero bytes does not always mean safe to remove. Sometimes it is a failed write you should retry from source.
Safe delete defaults
- Default delete mode: Recycle Bin (
trash). - Permanent delete requires explicit confirmation in UI.
- Scan exclusions from Settings apply to junk scans.
- Cleanup actions reuse the same operation journal as duplicate deletes, so you can undo when a batch was too aggressive.
Try the browser junk finder first
The Empty / 0-Byte / Junk File Finder scans a local folder in your browser: empty folders, zero-byte files, common temp patterns. Non-destructive preview; upgrade to the desktop Junk & Corrupt Finder for shortcut analysis, corrupt image decode checks, and apply with undo.
For a Downloads-focused walkthrough that ties browser triage, integrity scans, and Auto-Pilot together, see Clean your Downloads folder.
Suggested workflow
- Run junk scan on one heavy subtree (e.g.
Downloads, old project exports). - Sort by category; handle corrupt images separately from shortcuts.
- For shortcuts: fix targets where possible; delete only confirmed orphans.
- Apply in small batches; use undo if a needed placeholder was removed.
- Pair with disk usage triage to pick which subtree deserves junk pass vs duplicate pass.
vs CCleaner-style cleaners
CCleaner is complementary: clear browser caches with CCleaner, then run a file-integrity pass on broken files in your libraries. DupeZappa does not replace temp-file sweepers; it covers what they skip.
See DupeZappa vs CCleaner for how duplicate + junk modules fit together.
