Free Duplicate Folder Scanner: Try Before You Install

Scan a local folder in your browser for exact duplicates and image near-matches: no upload, no install, and a clear path to full cleanup.

You should not need a desktop install to answer: "Does this folder have duplicates, and how much space could I recover?"

The Duplicate Folder Scanner Lite runs in your browser. Files stay on your machine. The scan reads them locally, groups exact matches, flags image near-matches, and totals recoverable bytes. Nothing uploads to a server.

What the browser scan gives you

Output Why it helps
Exact duplicate groups Same content, different names: the easy wins
Image similarity hints Burst shots and resized exports flagged for review
Recoverable space total Payoff visible before any risky action

Use it on a messy Downloads folder, a photo export dump, or a project directory before committing to a full cleanup session.

What it deliberately does not do

It does not move, delete, or rename files. It has no undo history, no NAS-scale scan orchestration, and no smart keeper rules across thousands of groups in one click.

When to upgrade to the desktop app

Move to DupeZappa's Duplicate Scanner when you need:

  1. Apply with undo: delete or move duplicates with Recycle Bin and operation history.
  2. Keeper rules: keep_highest_resolution, keep_oldest, keep_shortest_path, and more (guide).
  3. Network drives: scan \\nas\share trees with progress and exclusions (NAS guide).
  4. Perceptual tuning: review near-duplicate image groups with side-by-side previews.
  5. Cross-tool workflow: disk triage, junk cleanup, rename, and search in one app.

For the full Windows photo cleanup path (scan, review, keeper rules, safe delete), see the duplicate photos use-case page.

Suggested workflow

  1. Run the browser scanner on one folder. Note group count and recoverable GB.
  2. Open the largest groups mentally: are they safe exact copies or "review required" similar images?
  3. If the payoff justifies a real cleanup pass, open DupeZappa and re-scan with preview-first delete.
  4. Apply in batches. Re-run the browser scanner afterward to confirm group count dropped.

Privacy note

Browser-based does not mean cloud-based. The lite tool processes files locally in your session. For sensitive work folders, a browser scan lets you evaluate the workflow before installing desktop software.

Run the free scan first, preview every group, and apply only when you have undo.
